HAURAKI RAIL TRAIL PROJECT |
|
Hauraki District Council chose the area between Karangahake and Waikino to begin construction, after agreeing with the Department of Conservation to upgrade the tracks in time for the Rugby World Cup. Partnering with DoC to work on the old rail route through the Karangahake Gorge will ensure that the tracks are not only suitable for walkers, but meet the standard required for the national cycleway. The construction opening of Stage One of the trail took place outside the Karangahake Hall. Clearning work may also begin on other sections of the trail over the coming weeks.
The Hauraki Rail Trail will be a 2-day ride, making it an ideal weekend experience. It will be accessed from Thames, Paeroa, Waihi or Te Aroha and the trail will offer a range of shorter riding options, including day rides.
Hauraki District Council also recently signed the lease with KiwiRail, giving them the head lease for the rail corridor that will become the rail trail. The project team are continuing to work with affected farmers to ensure that any impact on their farming operations is kept to a minimum. www.hauraki-dc.govt.nz

HOSPITAL TRANSPORT CO-ORDINATION |
|
A collaboration between 10 organisations has eventuated in a 12 month project to co-ordinate transport providers in the Hauraki Thames Coromandel region. This will assist in developing a more efficient service for transporting the public to Thames and Waikato Hospitals.
Lyn Thompson has been employed to manage, research and co-ordinate the project which is already raising significant issues for the region. A Health Survey is being conducted as part of the project and it is anticipated that this will provide data for health providers and associated organisations providing services. RURAL BROADBAND INITIATIVE |
|
The Government's objective for the Ultra-fast Broadband Initiative (UFB Initiative) is to accelerate the roll out of ultra fast broadband to 75% of New Zealanders over ten years, concentrating in the first six years on "priority users" such as businesses, schools and health services plus greenfield developments and certain tranches of residential development.
The programme commenced in 2009 and up to $1.35b will be provided for co-investment into open-access fibre-optic network infrastructure.
The Govt is committed to enabling 80% of rural households and enterprises to connect at 5Mbps or greater. In the local area a fibre backbone travels through Ngatea and onto Thames and then Coromandel, Whitianga, Whangamata and Waihi. A second line comes through Paeroa and onto Waihi. This is a Telecom line.

The latest Housing NZ Strategic Plan outlines the Corporation's intent to reconfigure it's portfolio to address the most significant need, which in the long term plan means increasing the number of properties in the larger cities. This would mean divesting of properties in areas of low demand, some of Hauraki fits into that catergory (Paeroa, Te Aroha). The plan suggests that HNZ work slowly towards this goal until 2015. The overall focus of State Housing has changed to providing housing assistance for an interim period of need, rather than a home for life.
